Development and Evaluation of an Online Hypnosis Intervention for the Treatment of Migraine.
This PhD research study is being conducted by Niamh Flynn at NUI, Galway, Ireland. The
research will design and evaluate the efficacy of an online hypnosis programme
for the treatment of migraines.
The International Association For The Study of Pain (IASP) note that approximately 13% to 18% of women and 5-10% of men are affected by migraine. The International Headache Society (Society, I. H, 2011) describes migraine as a common, disabling primary headache disorder, ranked by the World Health Organisation as number 19 among all diseases world-wide causing disability. The diagnostic criteria of migraine specified include at least 2 attacks if with aura and 5 attacks if without aura lasting between 4 and 72 hours, with characteristics of a pulsating quality, of moderate to severe intensity, aggravated by physical activity and associated with nausea (Society, I. H, 2011).
Once your neurologist or pain specialist has decided that you satisfy the criteria for migraine diagnosis and that you meet the criteria for inclusion in this study, if you agree to participate, numbers permitting, you will meet with the researcher prior to the study. At this time you will be provided with a consent form and any further questions you may have regarding the project will be answered. You will be requested not to participate in other research interventions while participating in this programme.
The online study will take place over six weeks. If you are accepted on to the programme you will be asked to complete a survey each week, once a week for six weeks. The surveys will take between five and twenty minutes to complete. On week three of the study you will be divided into one of two groups. One group will be given access to hypnosis mp3s specifically designed to alleviate migraine severity and frequency and to help with your migraines. The other group will receive the same mp3s two months after the six week study. Everyone who completes the study in full will receive all mp3s which were designed as part of the PhD research study.
Participants who are eligible to take part in the study will meet with the researcher on March 26th, 27th or March 29th 20013 in a group for a half hour meeting. The study will commence online on April 7th.
